Don't Let Halloween Night Become Your Own Horror Story

The night of October 31st has become a night of kids and families going door to door trick or treating.  When I was a kid we just went door to door and didn’t see any decorations or anything.  Now it seems that more and more people are putting out decorations and setting up their own mini scare house.  Your home can be a great place for families to visit.  If someone gets injured on your property while trick or treating that could spell for some very bad news.  It could open you up for a lawsuit.  Here is a list of things to be aware of to make your home as safe as possible for your visitors on Halloween.

  • Turn on your lights and make sure the walkway is well lit.
  • Remove any potential tripping hazard
  • Place a divider where your decorations are to prevent kids from running to them.
  • Make sure your decorations aren’t in the way of walkable traffic
  • If it’s windy, remove anything that is hanging that might get blown away.
  • Sit at the end of the driveway to hand out candy so there is no reason for someone to enter your property.
  • Keep any candles or jack-o-lanterns with candles away from areas someone would walk.  Costumes can catch on fire very easily.
  • Keep highly flammable items such as dried flowers, cornstalks, hay, or crepe paper away from any open flames.
  • Make sure any lighting decorations have ground-fault interrupters.

On the day of Halloween home owners claims are up about 24% over any other day of the year.  If something happens at your home on Halloween you probably have coverage to cover it.  Vandalism is covered, so if some hooligans that cause damage to your home it would be covered.  If your candle starts a fire, that would be covered under the peril of fire.  If someone gets hurt on your property, that would be covered under your liability and umbrella policy.  You might want to call your insurance agent to see how much it cost to increase the liability coverage on your home.  Have a safe night on Halloween.
